Barcelona boosts offshore 5G connectivity
Advanced connection up to 3.5km off coast brought in ahead of America’s Cup sailing race
The Barcelona city council has carried out various developments to improve the mobile phone network and give 5G connectivity the coastal front of the city coinciding with the celebration of the America's Cup.
The infrastructure, which has not had any cost for the city council, has been carried out by mobile phone operators ahead of the greater mobile network demand during the sporting competition.
In addition, these reinforcements will allow for a better coverage and 5G connectivity in the neighborhoods of Barceloneta, Vila Olímpica and Poblenou. In total, this improvement affects 3.5 kms of the coastal line.
According to the Catalan capital's city council and the local police, this new infrastructure will also allow to see the volume of people that moves around the area. Last week there was a daily average of 80,000 and 85,000 people in the coastal front of the city.
The Municipal Informatics Institute of the city council has worked with various phone companies such as Totem, Orange and Telefónica, to install mobile phone bases in Club Natació Atlètic Barceloneta, one of the areas with more crowd concentration because of the screens located there. As well as another mobile phone base installed in Agència Espanyola de Meteorologia, closed to the Fan Zone area of the competition.
Jordi Valls, deputy major of Barcelona's city council, said that "this infrastructure will stay here" and is working on installing these bases in other areas of the city.
