Award-winning Gabriel García Márquez library closes temporarily to repair damages
Amenity named world's best public library built in 2022
The Gabriel García Márquez Library closed on Monday to begin work to repair "damages" caused by the movement of the building.
The amenity opened in 2022 and was recognized as the world's best public library built that year soon after, but it will now be closed for three weeks.
Although the library will reopen on August 19, the works will last until mid-October.
In 2024, the Barcelona city council is putting in €5 million to improve and renew the city's libraries.
The investment will also see new furniture acquired, as well as corrective and preventive maintenance actions carried out in several libraries throughout the Catalan capital.
To facilitate digital transformation, the computer equipment of 17 libraries in the city will be renewed and the self-lending service will be implemented in 9 libraries.
