At least 7 fatal drownings in past week across Catalonia
Extra lifeguards on duty in Tarragona after several Platja del Miracle beach deaths
As temperatures soar, more and more people are heading to the water for some respite, but, unfortunately, this does not come without risk as at least seven people have drowned in pools or at beaches across Catalonia in the past week alone.
Two in three fatal drownings this year have taken place over the summer, with some 20 people dying since the beginning of June.
More lifeguards in Tarragona
Local authorities in Tarragona, in southern Catalonia, have announced there will be more lifeguards on duty after three people drowned at Platja del Miracle beach in under a month.
They also plan to put up more panels informing beachgoers of what each flag means.
A 32-year-old man drowned there on July 8, while another man estimated to be between 25 and 30 years of age passed away on July 26.
This Tuesday, a 40-year-old Italian man died while attempting to help two people get out of the water, and a day later, on Wednesday, a 70-year-old man in critical condition was taken to a local hospital.
Authorities urge caution
Catalan public health officials urge swimmers to be cautious at both beaches and swimming pools following the recent drownings.
The warning, issued last Tuesday on World Drowning Prevention Day, notes that anyone is at risk of drowning, especially when exposed to drastic temperature changes or strenuous physical activity.
It advises against swimming alone and recommends going to beaches with lifeguards, not swimming when there is a red flag, after eating, sunbathing for a long time, or excessive exercise.
