There were almost 8,000 hours of traffic jams on the AP-7 highway in 2024, around 1,400 more hours than in 2023, according to data from the Catalan traffic agency and analyzed by the Catalan News Agency (ACN).

If a vehicle were to face all stoppages registered in the Catalan stretch of the highway together, it would have spent around 10 hours and 45 minutes stuck in traffic every day in each direction.

Registered traffic jams counted for a total of 7,860 hours, up by 21.5% from the 2023 figures, which were already a record.

Since 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, figures have continued to rise, especially after August 31, 2021, when highways became free.

699 incidents

Authorities also registered the highest number of accidents across the highway, with 699 incidents with injuries, almost two every day. This is the highest figure, at least, since 2019. Despite the increase, only five people lost their lives, the lowest number of the last five years.

In 2023, there were 676 accidents with injured car passengers. Compared to 2019's 381 accidents, the traffic agency says the figure rose by 39% in 2024.

As usual, July and August had the most accidents registered.
