Alleged perpetrators of fatal Girona shooting arrested in Granada
Man and woman detained over killing of two people on Sant Joan's Eve
Catalan police, the Mossos d'Esquadra, in coordination with Spain's Civil Guard, have arrested two people in Granada, Andalusia, the alleged perpetrators of the Sant Joan's Eve shooting in Girona that left two people dead and two others injured.
The two people arrested in the town of Pinos Puente were a man and a woman, the Catalan News Agency has learned.
A search was also carried out in Alcalá la Real, in Jaén, Andalusia.
The investigation is being coordinated by the Mossos' Criminal Investigation Department (DIC) and the Civil Guard's Judicial Police. Reporting restrictions on the case are in place.
Last week, two men linked to the shooting in the Girona neighborhood of Font de la Pólvora – the brothers-in-law of one of the alleged perpetrators – turned themselves in to the police. The two men were arrested and kept in provisional detention without bail.
A few days after the shooting, law enforcement agents found the burnt-out car of the alleged perpetrator in Mont-ras, a municipality in the Baix Empordà county. They also discovered the weapon used, an AK-47 assault rifle.
The shooting triggered several violent attacks across Girona, and in other nearby municipalities, including Figueres' Sant Joan neighborhood, where properties linked to the alleged perpetrator were set on fire.
From July 26 to August 1, police arrested nine people, aged between 34 and 55, for their involvement in the attacks and for public disorder. Two of them were allegedly part of the incidents at Girona's Josep Trueta hospital on Sant Joan's Eve. Following the shooting, dozens of people attempted to enter the hospital and injured two law enforcement officers.
