Ada Colau and Jaume Asens attacked by Israeli army in Palestine
Former Barcelona mayor and MEP in Ramallah to investigate "systematic violations" of international law
Former mayor Ada Colau and the Comuns MEP Jaume Asens have denounced an attack by the Israeli army against the international delegation they are a part of in Palestine.
The group travelled to Ramallah in the West Bank of Palestine to investigate "systematic violations" of international law by Israel.
As Asens explained in a video posted on social media platform 'X', the delegation was attacked with tear gas and "deafening shots" while they were accompanying Palestinian farmers trying to harvest olives.
"They've been trying for a long time, but the army and the settlers are preventing it. We thought our presence here would be a deterrent, but it hasn't been that way," Asens lamented.
In the video, Asens regretted the "tension" generated by the Israeli army and explained that the attack was also against the farmers. Israel are "in breach of international law," the politician said.
The delegation, organized by Progressive International and the National Lawyers Guild, arrived in the city of Ramallah last Monday. It is formed of legal experts, human rights defenders, and parliamentary representatives from around the world.
The investigation will focus on the torture of prisoners, the imprisonment of Palestinian civilians for political reasons, as well as activists and minors.
In a video published on social networks on Monday, the former mayor of Barcelona explained that the delegation will meet with Palestinian organizations and visit cities and rural areas of the West Bank throughout the week "to see the different situations of apartheid and human rights violations that were already occurring a year ago, but have now increased."
Colau advocated "not normalizing barbarism" and lamented that apartheid is allowed to flourish "with the complicity of the European Union and the United States." She also demanded that western administrations stop "funding" this situation, by implementing a "total arms embargo" on Israel.
