2025-26 school year to start on September 8
Education department confirms start date with principals and teaching unions

The 2025-2026 school year will begin on September 8 for kindergarten, primary and secondary school (ESO) students.
This date was proposed by the Department of Education and ratified by the Education Council of Catalonia after a consultative process with the different actors in the educational sector.
Unions, however, did not agree with the start date and instead proposed starting after the National Day, September 11.
As for post-compulsory studies, 'batxillerat' and vocational training, the start date will be September 12.
Studies will resume September 15 for arts and sports education, and Septmeber 22 for adult schools and official language schools.
Education minister Esther Niubó said that September 8 is a "balanced" date because it guarantees "stability" with the current calendar, allows for good preparation, and the welcoming of new teachers.
In addition, she insisted that this date has the backing of the Education Council.
Advancement of appointments
The minister has also announced that they will bring appointments forward so that schools have enough time to know the templates and prepare for the course.
Last year, the previous team managing the ministry said they would publish during the first week of July, but a technical problem ended up delaying it until July 15. Now, Niubó has assured that she wants to bring this date forward to avoid any issues.
When asked whether the start of the school year before the National Day celebrations (September 11) will be maintained in the coming years, Niubó said that she has always felt this is "very reasonable."
Regarding the opposition of the unions, she responded that the favorable opinion of the Education Council, where she recalled that the various agents of the educational community are represented, gives them "strength" to confirm this date.
