Barcelona's 17 new speed cameras came in to full operation on Monday, with sanctions for drivers after four months of tests.

The speed limit has been set to 30 km/h near schools, while five speed camaras will monitor areas deemed "dangerous" due to speeding.

The four months of testing started in September and allowed drivers to become aware of the new speed limits and the location of these speed cameras, as the city council explained in a statement.

Since October, drivers surpassing those speed limits received a letter informing them about the new legislation, but no fines had been issued. 

The city council's goal is to improve traffic safety and reduce the number of accidents in the Catalan capital, with high speeeds one of the main causes of collisions.

New speed cameras

Overall, 17 new speed cameras have been installed. Of those, 12 are placed close to schools, with a speed limit of 30 km/h, on the following streets.

Numància (between Anglesola and  Deu i Mata), Ítaca and Anglesola schools.

Pau Claris (corner with Aragó).

Mallorca (between Nàpols and Roger de Flor), Escola Dominiques school.

Mallorca (between Muntanya and Fontova), Escola Dovella school.

Travessera de Gràcia (between Aribau and Alfons XII), Escola Infant Jesús school.

Indústria (between Sant Quintí and Conca), Escola Miralletes and Institut Moisès Broggi schools.

Sant Antoni Maria Claret (between Trinxant and Guinardó), Escola Antoni Balmanya school.

Balmes (between Marià Cubí and Travessera de Gràcia), Escola Pia school.

Balmes (between Francolí and Santjoanistes), Escola Poeta Foix school.

Entença (between Provença and Rosselló), Xirinacs i Entença schools.

Sardenya (between Taxdirt and Trav.. Gràcia), Escola de les Aigües school.

Muntaner (between Còrsega and Rosselló), Escola Sant Miquel school.

"Risk" areas

The other five speed cameras are located at points of the city considered to be "risk" areas due to speeding. The speed limit for these is 50 km/h.

Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes (by Sant Roc – Sant Germà).

Av. Diagonal (between pl. Pius XII and Pedralbes Palace).

Av. Diagonal (corner with Numància).
