Around 15% of electric scooter drivers in Barcelona were involved in an accident where they suffered some kind of physical injury in 2022, according to a RACC Mobility Club report about mobility in electric scooters, hoverboards and segways.

More than half of those accidents, 53%, were the result of a collision between more than one party.

RACC's report ascertains that electric scooters have increased by 4% since 2021, therefore "consolidating its presence," as RACC's president, Josep Mateu, has confirmed.

The report also states that incidents with electric scooters have surpassed those with bicycles for the first time. Although most electric scooter accidents are mild, around 0.8% of those registered were serious .

However, RACC's Mobility Area director Cristian Bardaji emphasized that so far this year, two drivers suffered deadly accidents.

Scooter collisions are the most frequent type of accidents (61%), followed by runover of pedestrians (20%), and falls (9%).

Electric scooter drivers' feeling of "vulnerability" has decreased since 2021. However, users think that there should be more "road education" as well as a "better segregated and signaled infrastructure."

The survey shows that 23% of drivers do not know the specific regulations concerning electric scooters .

When it comes to drivers' behavior, the report points out that 46% of electric scooter users do not stop on red lights when there are no other vehicles circulating. It also found that 42% circulate in the opposite direction or go onto the sidewalk in order to go faster, while 10% admit to tampering with the vehicle to increase velocity.
