Spanish election: 65.41% turnout in Catalonia, slightly lower than 2019

Voter turnout in the Spanish general election in Catalonia is 65.41%, as announced by Spain's interior ministry.

This is almost four percentage points lower than in the November 2019 vote, and while at 6 pm, it was over 11 percentage points, the mail-in ballot shortened the difference.

Across Spain, turnout was 70.38%, 4.15 percentage points more than in the last general election. 

At 2 pm, turnout in Catalonia was 36.78%, almost 4 percentage points lower than in 2019.

Over 5.7 million Catalans are electing 48 MPs as well as 12 senators. The Catalan parliament appoints the remaining eight senators from Catalonia. 

Because the Spanish general election has been held this late in the summer, an unprecedented number of people have chosen to request mail-in ballots: more than 2.6 million across Spain and 275,000 in Catalonia.
