94.2% of people who requested mail-in votes cast postal ballot, highest figure in history
More than 250,000 votes by post in Catalonia
94.2% of citizens who requested to vote in the Spanish election by mail have done so – a historic high for this figure, according to deputy director of the Correos post office operations, Alonso Nistal.
Of the 2.6 million applications, more than 2.46 million postal ballots had been cast.
In Catalonia, around a quarter of a million people have already voted by post, more than 90% of the total number of people who had requested to vote in this manner.
That represents a 99,08% increase in the mail votes cast in the last general election in 2019.
Of the 276.349 Catalans who asked for a mail-in ballot, 251.324 submitted their votes through the post, which represents 90,94% of the voters who had requested it.
Overall, there are 5,703,737 Catalans with the right to vote.
The electoral board (JEC) approved extending the deadline until 2 pm on Friday at the request of the post office. Initially, the deadline was Thursday.
Nistal pointed out that the number of votes cast by mail exceeds "by more than 80%" that of the 2016 general elections, which was already a record.
