Resolution close on Union for the Mediterranean's use of Palace of Pedralbes
Catalan president Pere Aragonès and UfM secretary general Nasser Kamel find solution to dispute
The Catalan government has announced an agreement in principle with the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) over granting the organizaton more space at the Palace of Pedralbes.
Following a meeting on Monday evening between President Pere Aragonès and the general secretary of the UfM, Nasser Kamel, at the headquarters of the government, Catalan foreign minister, Meritxell Serret, explained that a solution has been found to the dispute over the use of the building.
It will allow the UfM to use another floor in the palace, granting it an extra 1,000 square meters of floor space approximately.
There are still some technicalities to work through to seal the deal.
In an interview with the Catalan News Agency (ACN) in July, Kamel accused the Catalan government of asking him to pay for the use of meeting rooms.
The Palace of Pedralbes came under government ownership in February 2022 when the building and gardens were transferred free of charge from Barcelona City Council.
The Catalan executive welcomed the return of top-level relations with the UfM after the first meeting between leaders since 2016.
The Union for the Mediterranean is an intergovernmental institution that brings together the European Union member states and 16 countries from the southern and eastern shores of the Mediterranean to promote dialogue and cooperation. Its permanent headquarters are at the Palace of Pedralbes in Barcelona.
