The newly named Catalan president, Socialist Salvador Illa, and the outgoing president, Pere Aragonès, met on Friday to begin the process of handing over the government.

This meeting comes the day after the parliament appointed the new president in an intense investiture debate.

Aragonès wanted to inform the new president about the macroeconomic situation of Catalonia, as well as the current status of the relationship between the Catalan government and the Spanish government, and Catalonia's security challenges.

The outgoing president stated that he wanted to "defend and maintain the prestige of the institution" and that is why he wanted to have a "proper" transfer.

Pere Aragonès believes he is leaving behind a "better" Catalonia than the one he found when he first became president in 2021.
