The former leader of the Catalan Socialists, Miquel Iceta, will be the new ambassador of Spain to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), as confirmed by the Catalan News Agency (ACN).

Iceta, who served as Minister of Culture and Sports from July 2021 and November 2023, will have to leave his current position as a member of Congress, as the seat is incompatible with the new role.

The Council of Ministers is expected to approve his appointment on Tuesday. Iceta will replace another former Culture Minister, José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes.

Iceta served as Spain's Culture Minister between July 2021 and November 2023. He oversaw territorial policy between January and July 2021.

Catalonia is home to a wealth of UNESCO World Heritage sites, in Barcelona and beyond.
