Lia Miller has been named the new US Consul General to Barcelona.

Miller arrives in the post following the departure of Katie Stana in June.

As a career diplomat since 2003, she has worked in the Middle East, North Africa, Eastern Europe, and Latin America before her arrival in the Catalan capital.

Prior to taking up the role in August 2024, ​​she worked as a senior adviser on women, peace and security in the U.S. Naval War College.

At the State Department, she held positions in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, the Operations Center, the Bureau of Global Public Affairs, the Office of Middle East Transitions, the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, and has also worked at US embassies in Armenia, Bolivia, Tunisia, Nicaragua, and Oman.

Lia Miller holds a double degree in Social Work and African American Studies, a Master's in Public Administration, and another in International Relations from Syracuse University.

In addition, she has a Masters in Social Work from Columbia University and a Masters in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College.

She has studied Spanish, Arabic, Armenian, French, and Portuguese.

The consul general is the main officer of the US consulate general in Barcelona, ​​with jurisdiction over Catalonia, Aragon, and the Principality of Andorra.

The position is renewed every three years as it corresponds to career diplomats.
