The mayor of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Núria Marín, will step down after almost 16 years in office. She will be replaced by councillor David Quirós from June 15.

However, Marín will remain active in politics, as she is currently a senator following last year's general election and vice president of the Socialists in Catalonia.

The announcement comes two weeks after the Catalan election, which was won by the Socialists led by Salvador Illa.

Since then, there has been speculation about the possible members of a Socialist-led government, and Marín could be one of them.

L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Catalonia's second largest city after Barcelona, has been a Socialist stronghold for more than 45 consecutive years.
