Judge shelves l'Hospitalet mayor's alleged corruption case
Two former Socialist council members still under investigation
A judge has shelved l'Hospitalet mayor Núria Marín's alleged corruption case relating to supposed accounting irregularities in her council's sports department, as was first reported by El Periódico and confirmed by the Catalan News Agency on Tuesday.
According to the judge, the Socialist politician did not seek to tamper with evidence nor was she personally involved in any of the granting of subsidies.
Marín "took the measures she deemed necessary to clarify the facts," the judge ruled, siding with the public prosecutor's office. "And once the case began to be investigated, she took no further action within the council."
Former Socialist councilors Cristian Alcáraz and Cristóbal Plaza are, however, still under investigation for allegedly diverting public funds.
The public prosecutor believes there is evidence Alcáraz pretended to fire Plaza in order to award him a €47,147 severance package as he was later on hired as an adviser to the Socialist party and then went on to win a seat in L'Hospitalet's council.
