ERC lays out new political strategy for self-determination
Pro-independence party does not reject “unilaterality” in order to create Catalan republic
A new roadmap for the pro-independence Esquerra Republicana (ERC) party has been approved by its members on Sunday. The main priority is negotiating with Madrid, and committing to carrying out a referendum on Catalan self-determination agreed upon with the Spanish government.
The new political strategy does nor reject “unilaterality” in order to achieve independence. The changes to the manifesto received wide support from across the party, with 95.5% votes in favour.
Speaking on Sunday, ERC member and vice-president Pere Aragonès said that the government will “never” give up Catalonia’s right to self-determination.
The parliament speaker, Rogert Torrent, also member of ERC, has said that “nobody” can demand that the party make “symbolic gestures.”
