CUP to decide on Torra’s presidential bid on Sunday
Pro-independence party could vote against the candidate
The first attempt to appoint Quim Torra as president failed on Saturday at the Catalan parliament, and his bid for office will be voted again on Monday. Still, pro-independence parties could fall short of a majority to swear him in if far-left CUP decide to vote against the candidate.
CUP is holding an extraordinary political council on Sunday to discuss whether to abstain or vote against Torra. While today’s plenary session is seen as a mere formality before Monday’s investiture debate, the possibility of CUP voting ‘no’ would be a major shock that could lead to an automatic snap in Catalonia if no government is formed by May 22.
