Christian Democrat Unió ask the Europarliament not to put them in the ‘no’ block
Christian Democrat Unió, the smaller party within the former coalition CiU, doesn’t want to be counted as anti-independence. “Please, do not put Unió and ‘Catalunya Sí que es Pot’ [‘Catalonia Yes we Can’] in the ‘no’ block” asked Unió MEP Francesc Gambús. His demand was sent by email to the 751 MEPs as a response to Spanish conservative UPyD’s leader in Brussels, Maite Pagazartundua, who claimed that the 27-S results were clearly against independence. “We don’t support independence in the same way as the pro-independence candidacies do” he clarified “but we can’t be counted in the same block as the People’s Party PP, the Spanish Socialist Party PSOE and Anti-Catalan nationalism Ciutadans either” he said “and you know it”, he added, addressing Pagazartundua.
Brussels (CNA).- “Please, do not put Unió and ‘Catalunya Sí que es Pot’ [‘Catalonia Yes we Can’] in the ‘no’ block”, demanded Christian Democrat Unió MEP Francesc Gambús in an email sent to the 751 MEPs. By this, Gambús wanted to clarify comments made by Spanish conservative UPyD’s leader in Brussels, Maite Pagazartundua, who assured that Unió’s votes counted as anti-independence votes. “We don’t support independence in the same way as the pro-independence candidacies do” he clarified “but we can’t be counted in the same block as the People’s Party PP, Spanish Socialist Party PSOE and Anti-Catalan nationalism Ciutadans either” he said “and you know it”, he added, addressing Pagazartundua.
“We have explained it many times to the Catalan people. And somebody who is well-informed of what is happening in Catalonia should know that” stated Unió’s MEP. Gambús responded to Spanish conservative UPyD’s leader in Brussels, Maite Pagazartundua, who had previously sent an email to the MEPs accusing some parties of misinterpretation of the 27-S results. To prove this, Pagazartundua attached a graphic that appeared in Spanish newspaper ‘El País’ which counted Unio’s votes in the ‘no’ block. “Pro-independence: 47.78%. Anti-independence: 51.69%” she added to the graphic. “We don’t support independence in the same way as the pro-independence candidacies do” clarified Gambús “but we can’t be counted in the same block as the People’s Party PP, the Spanish Socialist Party PSOE and Anti-Catalan nationalism Ciutadans either” he said “and you know it”, he added, addressing Pagazartundua.
Liberal CDC MEP Ramon Tremosa sent an email this morning to the MEPs emphasising the pro-independence forces victory. “Pro-independence coalitions obtained 48% of votes, more than the 39% of the PP, the PSOE and Ciutadans’ unionist votes and the 12% for federalists and pro-referendum parties” he stated.
