Catalonia to pass law regulating rent prices after deal between activists and political parties
Tenants’ Union says JxCat party will back the measure in Wednesday’s vote despite previous disagreements
The Catalan parliament is set to pass a law regulating rent prices on Wednesday afternoon after activists from the Tenants’ Union (or Sindicat de Llogateres in Catalan) reached a deal with political parties securing a majority of lawmakers’ votes.
"We’ve reached an agreement with the four backing groups to approve the law," the Tenants’ Union tweeted on Tuesday afternoon.
The text was originally proposed by the two parties in the Catalan government, Junts per Catalunya (JxCat) and Esquerra (ERC), their pro-independence and far-left ally CUP, as well as Catalunya En Comú-Podem, the left-wing party led by Barcelona mayor and former anti-eviction activist Ada Colau.
JxCat backed the measure and then proposed a series of amendments that raised concerns among activists that the law could be defeated in parliament.
