Catalan government to invest €128m in 2+1 roads
Measures to increase safe driving include rumble strips

The Catalan government will invest €128.8 million to convert 76.3 kilometers of Catalan roads into 2+1 roads by the end of 2026.
2+1 roads are three-lane roads with two lanes in one direction and one lane in the other, alternating every few kilometers.
According to the government spokeswoman, Sílvia Paneque, this is an “essential measure to increase safe driving and avoid head-on collisions” by 20%.
With this new plan, 7% of Catalonia’s road network will be renovated, with roads that currently have one lane in each direction will have three.
In 2027, another eight projects are scheduled to be carried out, renovating 38 kilometers.
In addition to the 2+1 system, the government will also install rumble strips on 700 kilometers of roads between 2025 and 2026. The strips are placed along the middle of the road and are another measure to prevent head-on collisions and fatal accidents by between 80% and 100%.
The first works will begin before Easter week and will cover 3.3 kilometers of the C-12 highway between Tivissa and Móra la Nova until Ribera d’Ebre.
