Barcelona's deputy mayor intends to run for MEP
Gerardo Pisarello wants to represent "transformative municipalism"
Barcelona's deputy mayor Gerardo Pisarello intends to become an MEP after the 2019 European election.
That is why he will take part in the internal vote held by his party Barcelona en Comú –left-wing non-aligned in the independence issue– to choose its candidates for the upcoming May 26 vote.
Pisarello announced it on Monday, saying that he wants to be part of a ticket representing the "transformative municipalism." That is, for him, the politics involving measures in specific areas of cities in order to "democratize democracy and achieve specific advance for the life of people."
Barcelona's number 2 said that by empowering local governments, "creative, solid alternatives to austerity and fear can be built." How? For instance, "investing more in the more needed neighborhoods, fighting speculation, defending common goods such as water or energy, and promoting kinder and more 'breathable' cities."
