Amnesty benefits 193 people in first six months, half of them police officers
Activist group Alerta Solidària says more than 100 people have seen application of the law denied or delayed
Six months after the amnesty law came into force, 193 people have benefited from it, according to pro-independence activist group Alerta Solidària.
Half of the total, 96, are police officers, 84 are activists or protesters and 13 are politicians and public officials, the group said.
Police officers have not received any denials in their amnesty requests. On the contrary, 28 protesters and 23 politicians have seen their requests vetoed.
Referrals to other courts, in the form of questions about the constitutionality of the law or its fit with European Union law, have been applied to 15 protesters or activists and to 52 politicians or public officials.
Girona firefighters granted amnesty
Girona Criminal Court 1 has granted amnesty to the eight Girona firefighters accused of participating in protests the day after the 2017 referendum.
The firefighters were awaiting trial for the crime of neglect of public service for having participated in the demonstration in Plaça del Vi on October 2, 2017, while they were on duty.
More than 4,000 people gathered in the square that morning, including the firefighters, who were cheered and thanked by protestors for having protected them during police charges.
The court resolution puts an end to seven years of procedures that experienced a notorious legal obstacle because when the amnesty law came into force the case was not assigned to any court.
