Catalonia's National Day concluded on Wednesday with the traditional closing ceremony, this year celebrating the region's rich diversity and culture.

The iconic Four Columns on Barcelona's Montjuïc hill, designed by renowned Catalan architect Puig i Cadafalch, were once again illuminated to mark 'La Diada'.

After a day of tributes, demonstrations and cultural celebrations throughout Catalonia and abroad, the festivities culminated in an official ceremony at Montjuïc at 10pm.

This year's event highlighted Catalonia's commitment to inclusivity and diversity, reflecting the efforts of its citizens to "build a place that supports everyone and fosters respect and tolerance".

The 40-minute ceremony was attended by key political figures, including president Salvador Illa, parliament speaker Josep Rull and Spanish Congress speaker Francina Armengol, as well as many former Catalan presidents.

The event featured a rich program of music, poetry, circus performances, fireworks and traditional folklore.

Catalan musician Marc Parrot opened the ceremony, with performances by singers Mama Dousha, the trio Marala and the band Companyia Elèctrica Dharma.

A video tribute featuring famous Catalans, including FC Barcelona players Lamine Yamal and Aitana Bonmatí, was also shown.

Folklore traditions were a highlight, with a performance by the Diables devil dances.

The ceremony concluded with the Escolania de Montserrat choir singing the Catalan national anthem, followed by a spectacular fireworks finale.

The day has great historical significance for Catalonia, as it marks the fall of Barcelona in 1714 during the War of the Spanish Succession and the subsequent loss of sovereignty.

In recent years, September 11 has been marked by some of the largest demonstrations of the pro-independence movement.

This year, however, some 73,5000 protested across Catalonia, which makes it the year with the lowest turnout since these mass demonstrations began.
