Wine and Cava Fair in Barcelona at the feast of ‘La Mercè’

The Wine and Cava Fair celebrates its 35th year at the feast of ‘La Mercè’, in Barcelona. From the 19th to the 24th of September, 81 wineries from all 12 of Catalonia’s wine and Cava regions will be represented. The fair is a way of demonstrating that Catalonia produces top-quality wines which successfully compete with other regions. It is also an interesting way of introducing new enthusiasts to wine culture. Wine and Cava will be sold by all the wineries at the fair, and there is a large area reserved for wine tasting. There is also the opportunity to sample other typical Catalan products, including a selection of the best local sausages and cheeses.

Barcelona (CNA).- The Wine and Cava Fair in Barcelona has once again broken its record for the number of winery participants. In its 35th year at the feast of ‘La Mercè’, Barcelona’s biggest Festival, 81 wineries from all 12 of Catalonia’s wine and Cava regions will be present. More than 150,000 people are expected to visit the fair and to taste the wines with protected designation of origin (PDO). Local food products such as cold meats, fish and nougat, including cheeses from the Catalan Association of Livestock Producers of Artisan Cheeses (Acrefa), will also be sold at the Wine and Cava Fair.

The fair will be held from the 19th-24th September in the Catalan capital and is organised by the Catalan Institute of Vines and Wines (Incavi), the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food and the Promoter of Agro-alimentary exports (Prodeca).

It is one of Barcelona’s most established and popular fairs, especially with the city’s residents and tourists, who come to discover Catalonia’s wines and cavas with protected designationof origin (DOs). Spread along the ‘Passeig de Lluís Companys’, under the ‘Arc de Triomf’, the fair offers a big showcase of new products as well as a platform for raising the profile of Barcelona’s wine culture and is an ideal way of offering the public the chance to sample local products and learn about Catalan culture through the simple purchase of a tasting ticket.

A Colourful Wine Fair

This year’s wine fair has collaborated with ‘Drawing on Location’, and will hold an “urban illustrations and sketches” competition. Professional and amateur artists can participate by drawing in a space allocated at the fair. Artwork will be posted on Facebook where people will be able to vote for the best drawing.

The Catalan Institute of Vines and Wines (Incavi), the Promoter of Agro-alimentary exports (Prodeca) and the magazine ‘Cuina’, have also organised a photo contest, “#fotovinsCUINA”, through twitter. The winner, chosen by ‘Cuina’ magazine will win a dinner for two.

Beating Cancer with “Wine for Life”

The 35th Wine Fair continues to promote the value of solidarity introduced last year. This time around, the intention is to help the fight against cancer. For this reason, “solidarity hats” will be sold for only €1 to visitors. All contributions will go towards the non-profit association “Vi per Vida” (Wine for Life) which is dedicated to the research and fight against cancer.

The “solidarity campaign” continues after last year’s €2,500 success selling hats. The donations went entirely towards “Dialegs de Dona” (Women’s Dialogues), a social organisation dedicated to the integration of women in Raval, one of the most multicultural districts of Barcelona.
