No Covid deaths reported in Catalonia for first time in two months
Number of new daily diagnoses also at second lowest since last summer
Health authorities in Catalonia reported no coronavirus-related deaths on Monday for the first time in two months, a figure which emblemazises the improved epidemiological situation that has allowed for most lockdown measures to be gradually eased over the last few weeks.
As well as the lower number of casualties, other Covid-19 indicators seem to show positive signs.
In comparison with the last time health officials reported no new deaths, on March 25, the number of patients hospitalized with Covid-19 is now nearly at half of what it was, having fallen from 1,386 to 757. Although, 25 more people with the virus were admitted into hospital within the previous 24 hours.
The difference in cases diagnosed by PCR tests is even greater, once at 1,638 infections two months ago and now at 256 new cases reported on Monday.
The number of new reported cases is virtually the second lowest since last summer, only behind the 220 daily diagnoses on May 23.
Risk of new outbreaks lowest in 10 months
The risk of new coronavirus outbreaks continues to decrease, with the downward trend having run almost uninterruptedly for one month, and is now standing at 104.
Using the iEPG index, the outbreak risk is calculated by multiplying the average spread of the virus over the past seven days by the cumulative incidence over the past two weeks. The limit for 'high' risk is above 100, and 'very high' from 200.
If the risk of new outbreaks continues to decrease, it could fall below the 100-point threshold for the first time since July 15, 2020.
Inoculation campaign
Catalonia's inoculation campaign began on December 27, 2020. As of May 30, 2021, 2,862,703 residents have been given the first dose of the vaccine, 36.6% of the total population. Out of those, 1,362,852 have also been administered the second dose (17.4% of the total population). 1,459,046 residents are considered to be fully immunized (18.7%).
