Minute’s silence for Miguel Ángel Blanco in Catalan Parliament
Some 40 Catalan MPs mark 20th anniversary of Basque councilor’s assassination by ETA
The Catalan Parliament held a minute silence for Miguel Ángel Blanco on Thursday, on the 20th anniversary of ETA’s assassination of the People’s Party councilor in Ermua, in the Basque Country.
The decision to hold the gesture of respect for the local politician murdered by the terrorist group in 1997 came after a request from the PPC, the Catalan wing of the People’s Party.
Some 40 MPs took part in the commemoration in the chamber, although the only parliamentary party leader present was the head of the CSQP group, Lluís Rabell. In fact, not even the head of the party that had made the request, Xavier García Albiol, took part, although Catalan government spokesperson, Neus Munté, Vice President Oriol Junqueras, Minister of Home Affairs Jordi Jané, as well as agriculture and fisheries minister, Meritxell Serret, were there.
