The former Spanish police leadership in Catalonia began testifying in the independence trial on Thursday morning.

Sebastián Trapote, head of Spain's National Police force during the October 1, 2017 referendum crackdown, was the first to be cross-examined.

Ángel Gozalo, who commanded the Guardia Civil police on the same day, was expected to face the court as a witness later in the morning.

Two high-ranking Catalan police officials were also summoned for Thursday.

This will be the first time that representatives of the Catalan police speak after the criticisms of how the force handled the referendum by Spain's former political and police officials.
