Grid operator rules out cyberattack as cause of Spain's blackout

National grid operator Red Eléctrica has ruled out a cyberattack as the cause of the widespread blackout that has affected Spain over the past 24 hours.

The origin of the power outage may be linked to an issue in the electricity generation system that began in the southwest of Spain, according to the company's director of operational services, Eduardo Prieto.

Prieto promised that the company would implement "the necessary measures" to prevent a similar incident from occurring again.

He acknowledged that better interconnections with neighboring countries would improve the security of the Spanish grid.

Red Eléctrica also announced on Tuesday morning that the electricity system in mainland Spain was operating normally again. In a message on X (formerly Twitter) at 11:15 am, the company said the morning demand peak was reached at 8:35 am with 28,677 MW, and the evening peak is expected at 9:10 pm with 31,200 MW.
