Sant Jordi is Catalonia's most romantic day, with people buying books and roses for their loved ones on April 23.

Many bookshops and libraries will host book signings and activities during Sant Jordi to celebrate love and literature, but much of the activity will take place on the streets.

Read on to find out what to do in Catalonia, outside of Barcelona, or check out the many events in the Catalan capital here.

Girona

In northern Catalonia, Sant Jordi will once again return to the areas Barri Vell and El Mercadal, with the center of all activities in the city being Plaça Catalunya, where most of the books and rose stands will be.

This allows for more space and for more people to pass through without blocking the street.

Around La Rambla, El Pont de Pedra, and Carrer de Santa Clara as well as Carrer Nou will be the designated areas for social organizations.

Throughout the day, there will be book signings, workshops and children's activities as well as the opportunity to dance traditional sardanes dances at Plaça de la Independència on April 23 at 6pm.

Tarragona

In southern Catalonia, Sant Jordi will be celebrated with stalls selling books and roses on the Rambla Nova boulevard.

On the street there will be traditional castellers, or human towers, at 8pm.

Those wanting to dance sardanes can do so at Verdaguer square at 7pm.

There will also be various book signings with authors at different bookshops around the city.

Some of the main museums of the city such as the Archaeological Museum of Tarragona, the Roman Villa of Els Munts, and the Centcelles Roman ensemble will have free entrance on April 23.

Lleida

To the west, Lleida's central celebration point will be concentrated between Rambla de Ferran boulevard and Francesc Macià avenue. There, book and rose sellers will set up their stands for the day's joyful celebrations.

There will also be a stage for musical performances at the intersection between Rambla de Ferran Carrer de Democràcia, as well as a sardanes dance at 7 pm.

Badalona

Badalona, just north of Barcelona, will hold its yearly Book Fair at the Plaça de Pompeu Fabra between April 21 and April 23.

On April 23, the 13th edition of the Sant Jordi Fair will take place at the Carrer de Francesc Layret, where shops and organizations will participate and sell products related to Sant Jordi, such as flowers, pastries and books

At 11 am, the yearly literary Pompeu Fabra Route will start at the Espai Betúlia, and take people on a walk through the Badalona of the Catalan grammarian, who lived in Badalona between 1912 and 1939.

Additionally, all neighborhoods of Badalona, will offer children’s activities around all the libraries, including children’s theater, concerts, and workshops.

Calonge i Sant Antoni

In the Costa Brava municipality of Calonge i Sant Antoni, Sant Jordi really takes over.

Calonge is considered a book town, a first in Catalonia, and features many bookstores along its streets.

For the same reason, the Sant Jordi celebrations start earlier than anywhere else. From April 4 to 26, there will be 35 events and nearly 40 book signings, although most of them take place on Sant Jordi Day.

On April 23, the town center of Calonge will have stands with books and roses, concerts and authors signing books, as well as theater and an art installation.

Una rosa, un llibre, i un drac!

Sant Jordi, Catalonia's Day of Love, has a particular vocabulary you should know before April 23. Catalans walk down the streets, gifting roses (roses) and llibres (books) to their enamorats (loved ones.)

Roses, the llegenda (legend) says, grew from the blood of the dead Drac (dragon), killed by Sant Jordi (Saint George). Streets across Catalonia fill up with hundreds of parades (stalls selling books or roses) to celebrate un dels dies més bonics de l'any (one of the most beautiful days of the year).
