The City Council is renewing Barcelona's flora, planting 156,000 seedlings
Flowers of varying species, size and colour have been chosen based on their ability endure the climate of the city.
Barcelona (ACN).- Barcelona’s City Council has begun to renovate flowering spaces, at 274 different points throughout the city. A total of 156,000 seedlings will be planted, to bring new life to the squares, parks and gardens that are scattered throughout Barcelona. According to Lourdes Carreres, the Technical Environmental Manager of the 'Green Areas' of the city, the criteria for deciding which type of flower to plant came down to the length of flowering time, the colour scheme and individual suitability to survive the varied weather experienced in Barcelona. The renewal comes as part of an ongoing summer programme of maintenance to the 'green spaces', which is planned to be completed by the 9th September. A planting campaign takes place three times a year in Barcelona, typically up to September, November and May, keeping the city looking fresh.
Within two weeks, Barcelona will welcome 156,000 new plants, distributed throughout the numerous parks, squares and gardens of the city. A total of 274 spaces, covering an area of 7,699m² will brighten up the city's landscape.
Lourdes Carreres, the Technical Environmental Manager of the 'Green Areas' of Barcelona said that she will "attempt, in every neighbourhood, to have a variety of colours," and added that "we are also encouraging the planting of flowering trees around Barcelona" to make the city even more attractive.
This is just one strategy in an overall plan to perform maintenance on the 'green spaces'. As Carreres has detailed, "after the plantation there is a general maintenance of these parks. Weeds are removed and dried flowers and plants are replaced as are those damaged by vandalism." Work is expected to last until September 9th.
The plant species have been chosen according to how well they will complement the designs for a landscape rich in colour. This includes the shade of the plant as well as its length of flowering time. Strong consideration has also been given to the ability of the species to resist the varied weather conditions in the city.
