Largest bench in Catalonia offers stunning river views
Helicopter used to install 5-meter wide seat in Riba-roja d'Ebre
Catalonia has a new biggest bench.
Standing 3 meters tall and spanning 5 meters wide, the bench has been installed at the Vall de Porcs viewpoint in Riba-roja d'Ebre, offering stunning views of the town and Ebre river.
The gigantic bench was transported from the city to the viewpoint by helicopter on December 4.
The initiative comes from the city's hiking association, Figot Tour, with the aim of becoming a new tourist attraction.
The bench was built in a month and assembled by members of the association and city hall workers.
The association has already set up a 20-kilometers route to hike up to the bench.
The route allows visitors to discover the beauty of the region, going through a cave that used to be a field hospital, cisterns, or lime oil ovens.
A ladder will also be installed so tourists can climb onto the bench and take pictures.
"It is a very ambitious project that arises from the desire to bring new things to the town and with the aim of attracting visitors and tourism," local councilor and member of Figot Tour, Jaume Agustí, said.
The bench is meant to be registered within the Big Bench Community project, which promotes tourism through a global itinerary. Two other benches in Catalonia are already registered: one in Vilalba Sasserra and another in Sant Jordi Desvalls.
