The Barcelona council will be collecting Christmas trees at 227 sites across the city from January 7 until January 17 in an initiative it hopes will encourage residents to not leave them beside trash containers in the street.

The trees will be pulped, left to decompose, and then used for mulching. Mulching helps with retaining humidity and aerating the soil and also prevents weeds.

People are asked to remove all decorations before taking their tree to a collection point so it can be recycled and turned into mulch.

Last year local authorities were able to collect a total of 9,351 trees and make 180 m3 of mulch for the city's parks and gardens.
