Girona ice rink to return this Christmas using collected rainwater
Last year the city canceled plans for an ice rink due to the drought
Girona will once again have an ice rink this Christmas after canceling last year due to the drought.
The ice rink will use rainwater that is already being collected in large containers.
First-time skaters and novices will have their own area to get used to the ice, with the 800-square-meter rink divided in two.
Organizers Fira de Girona have been collecting rainwater for several weeks, to be used to generate ice for the rink.
Some 30 containers capable of holding up to 1,000 liters each will ensure that a significant portion of the ice comes from reused water.
This festive season, Girona will launch a new event called 'Imagina' – the city's largest Christmas market.
Shopping, food and children's area
'Imagina' will be held at the Palau de Firas between December 21 and January 6, turning the conference hall into a winter wonderland, where young and old can enjoy a festive atmosphere during the Christmas holidays.
As well as the ice rink, there will be a shopping area, a food and drinks zone and a children's area.
Entry is free, although visitors need to buy a ticket to skate on the ice rink.
According to a statement from Fira de Girona, the improvement of the drought situation compared to 2023 (the Sau and Susqueda reservoirs have almost double the water reserves they had last year) has allowed the return of the rink.
The fair's usual opening hours will be from 10am to 9pm. It will be closed on Christmas Day, with special hours on certain other days over the holidays.
