'Fruitourism' in the western Catalan town of Aitona is the best tourist experience in Catalonia, according to the government, which has recognized the initiative in its annual tourism awards for 2019.

Set up in 2011 by the local council and revamped last year, the 'Fruitourism' initiative aims to show off the area's extensive peach and nectarine orchards to visitors, when the trees come into bloom in the springtime, especially in March.

Offering guided tours of the old town and nearby orchards, visitors get to admire and learn about the blossoming pink landscape, as well as the chance to taste some of the local produce, such as jam, honey, chocolate and cheese.

The 'Fruitourism' experience has seen exponential growth in recent years, to become one of the most popular tourist attractions, not only in the rural area of Lleida province, but even in Catalonia as a whole.

Award recognizes effort and dedication

The award is one of the government's main distinctions in the area of tourism, recognizing the effort and dedication of individuals, companies, and public and private institutions in contributing to Catalonia's image as a tourist destination at home and abroad.

Aitona's mayor, Rosa Pujol, expressed satisfaction at the award, which she said is dedicated to the locals, farmers, cooperatives, associations, volunteers and guides who have helped promote the area's "enormous natural treasure."

The numbers visiting the 'Fruitourism' experience every year has risen to over 18,000 in recent years, while the activities on offer have also continued to grow, with such novelties as quad bike and walking routes, and hot air balloon flights across the colorful fields.
