Catalan fashion designer Toni Miró dies aged 74
Icon created Antonio Miro brand in 1979 bringing designs to international catwalks
Catalan designer and businessman Toni Miró passed away on Thursday aged 74, as Catalan News Agency (ACN) has confirmed after public broadcaster TV3 first reported. The fashion icon brought his designs to international catwalks.
Born in Sabadell, near Barcelona, Miró opened his first shop back in 1968 when he was 20 years old. Groc (yellow) was located at the Catalan capital Rambla de Catalunya boulevard.
The huge success pushed him to launch ANTONIO MIRO in 1976 with the help of Spanish companies.
Apart from his business, Miró was also famous for being in charge of designing the clothing used in the 1992 Olympics, held in Barcelona.
His works also include several clothes for plays and films, as well as uniforms for companies and institutions, including the Catalan Mossos d'Esquadra police.
The prizes he received during his lifetime include the Cristóbal Balenciaga award in 1987, the Laus de Plata in 1992, the FAD Medal in 2000 – given by the Foment de les Arts i del Disseny association of designers – and the Golden Medal of Belles Arts in 2002.
Catalonia's business minister, Roger Torrent, reacted to the news tweeting that "he was a leading figure in the world of fashion in both Catalonia and at an international level."
