Assisted reproduction treatments soar in Catalonia
Nearly 50,000 treatments in 2021, with in vitro procedures reaching a record high
Assisted reproduction treatments in Catalonia reached nearly 50,000 in 2021, according to the latest data from the Health ministry.
The number of in vitro pregnancy attempts reached 38,126, the highest since the registry began in 2014, when 28,528 were recorded.
In addition, there were 8,754 treatments through artificial insemination, representing 26% of the Spanish total.
These figures mean that now one in four in vitro or artificial insemination treatments in Spain are conducted in Catalonia.
According to data from 2019, assisted reproduction techniques resulted in 9,240 pregnancies, 87% of which were through in vitro procedures, with half involving vitrified embryos from either own or donor oocytes.
The other 13% were through artificial insemination, with seven out of ten using donor sperm and the rest using the partner's sperm.
The first person born through in vitro fertilization in Spain and Catalonia, Victoria Anna Perea, turned 40 this month.
