Barcelona's local police Guàrdia Urbana cleared the pro-Palestine demonstrators' camp during the early hours of Friday in Barcelona's Plaça Universitat square after the first night.

Dozens of activists had camped on Thursday evening, planning to spend three nights, and clearing the area on Sunday, but the local police cleared the site around 3:20 am on Friday morning.

Demonstrators were calling for the Catalan and Spanish governments to break their ties with Israel and set up around 20 tents. Among the main promoters, there were students from the University of Barcelona, who recently camped inside the university's building.

Protestors were accusing the governments of "being accomplices of the genocide" taking place in Palestine.

"The eviction confirms once again what we have been protesting for months: the complicity with the genocidal state of Israel is structural and inherent in all our institutions," said activist Amir Faruk.

However, after local police cleared the area on Friday morning, demonstrators already announced that "the response will be as proportionate to their repression," as they shared in a statement on social media.

Students have planned a demonstration that will start on Friday afternoon at Plaça Universitat square.
