Catalonia has seen the highest number of house evictions in Spain during the first half of 2024, according to data by the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) analyzed by the Catalan News Agency (ACN).

In the first six months of the year 3,961 evictions took place in Catalonia. That number almost doubled the number in the second-highest region, Andalusia, with a total of 2,205.

The majority of these evictions in Catalonia were due to unpaid rent, with 2,967 cases in total. In terms of population, there was a ratio of 37 evictions per every 100,000 inhabitants.

605 evictions were caused by foreclosure, with a ratio of 7.6 evictions per 100,000 inhabitants. The remaining 389 evictions registered by the CGPJ were caused by other reasons.

The number of evictions registered in Catalonia in the first six months is similar to the total number of evictions registered in all of 2023, which stood at 3,989. However, it represents a decrease compared to the evictions seen in 2021 and 2022, when those numbers were 5,061 and 4,824, respectively.

By region, Barcelona ranked first in the second quarter of 2024 with 1,428 evictions, which almost doubles the amount registered in Madrid in the same period (831 evictions).

In relation to the amount of population, Girona had the highest ratio in Spain, with 40 evictions per 100,000 inhabitants.
