Water transfer from Delta de l'Ebre to Barcelona ruled out by climate action minister
The solution "for now" is to "save as much water as possible," David Mascort says
As the drought in Catalonia continues, the Catalan Minister for Climate Action, David Mascort, has reiterated that “for now” there will be no water transfer from the Delta de l’Ebre in south Catalonia to Barcelona, to improve the water deficit in the Catalan capital.
The idea of transferring water from the Delta de l’Ebre was previously suggested by the Intercollegiate Water Observatory of Catalonia. The Observatory proposed connecting water from Ter Llobregat, the main water supply system in Catalonia, with the smaller water supply of Tarragona in southern Catalonia.
A similar proposal was made by the Circular Economy Commission of Industrial Engineers.
Its president, Marc Oliva, emphasized the need for solutions that could increase the "resilience of the system."
The proposed plan to create a single pipe system had a €300 million price tag.
On Wednesday in Parliament, Mascort ruled out the idea, saying that "the connection is not the solution."
The government’s rejection of the idea was viewed as "positive" by the mayor of Tortosa in the Delta d’Ebre region, Jordi Jordan, as well as for the Ebre Defense Platform, who called the initial idea "immoral."
