Sant Jordi is Catalonia's most romantic day, with people buying books and roses for their loved ones on April 23.

The streets are covered in red flowers and full of people buying books for their loved ones.

Barcelona will have a record-breaking 500 stalls selling books and roses, making a total of 3,500 meters of space reserved for this joyous day.

Here is what to do and where to buy books and roses during Sant Jordi day in seven different districts of Barcelona.

Eixample district

This year, the Eixample district will once again become the city’s main attraction, with 203 book stalls, centered around the Sant Jordi Superblock around Passeig de Gràcia, between Diagonal and Gran Via and Carrer de Balmes and Pau Claris.

Casa Battló, one of the famous modernist buildings by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, will be decorated with roses, as it does each year, and is definitely worth a visit.

Another iconic piece of Gaudí architecture is the basilica Sagrada Família, which will celebrate Sant Jordi with a huge audiovisual art installation called ‘Llum Primigènia’, about the legend of Sant Jordi.

Ciutat Vella district

The central district of the Catalan capital will have 94 book stalls, with the more than one-kilometer-long boulevard La Rambla once again becoming one of the main attractions, despite being under construction.

At Passeig de Lluís Companys, the walkway in front of the Arc de Triomf monument, will also have books and rose stands. There will be a specific space reserved for comics, children's and youth literature.

On la Rambla de Raval, around 60 social organizations, collectives and associations will celebrate Sant Jordi with some 40 activities, including workshops and book presentations.

On the April 23, many museums and public institutions, such as the Barcelona City Hall will be open for visits.

There will be many activities by local organizations and shops in the area of La Diagonal Avenue.

Sant Martí district

This year, Sant Martí will have eleven book stalls, along with the already existing bookshops, and the main Sant Jordi areas will be around La Rambla de Poblenou, la Plaça del Mercat del Clot and the García Márquez library, that was named the 'Best New Library in the World' in 2023. The library will also be hosting activities.

Authors will be signing their books at the book stands and at the district's library. There will also be different literary activities, concerts and child-friendly events organized throughout the district.

One of the factors that makes the day so special is that it is celebrated up and down all of Catalonia. Check out our guide to where to celebrate Sant Jordi if you’re outside the Catalan capital.

Girona

In northern Catalonia, Sant Jordi will once again return to the areas Barri Vell and El Mercadal, with the center of all activities in the city being Plaça Catalunya, where most of the books and rose stands will be.

This allows for more space and for more people to pass through without blocking the street.

Around La Rambla, El Pont de Pedra, and Santa Clara Street as well as Carrer Nou street will be the designated areas for social organizations.

Throughout the day, there will be book signings, workshops and children's activities as well as the opportunity to dance traditional sardanes dances at Plaça de la Independència on April 23 at 6pm.

Tarragona

In the south of Catalonia, Sant Jordi will be celebrated with stalls selling books and roses on the Rambla Nova boulevard. On the street there will be traditional castellers, or human towers, at 8pm. Those wanting to dance sardanes can do so at Verdaguer square at 7pm.

There will also be various book signings with authors at different bookshops around the city.

Some of the main museums of the city such as the Archaeological Museum of Tarragona, the Roman Villa of Els Munts, and the Centcelles Roman ensemble will have free entrance on April 23.

Lleida

To the west, Lleida's central celebration point will be concentrated between Rambla de Ferran boulevard and Francesc Macià avenue. There, book and rose sellers will set up their stands for the day's joyful celebrations.

A new addition this year will be the newly opened location of the Morera museum on Rambla de Ferran boulevard. There will also be a stage for musical performances and to dance sardanes at 7pm.

169 requests have been made to set up a stall in the reserved area, promising a wide variety of books, roses and more.

Badalona

Badalona, just north of Barcelona, will hold its yearly Sant Jordi fair on Carrer Francesc Layret. Shops and organizations will participate and sell products related to Sant Jordi, such as flowers, pastries and books.

Some bookshops will set up on Plaça de Pompeu Fabra selling their books, while others will be present at Plaça de l'Ajuntament. These celebrations will start on April 20.

There will also be another celebration on the Sant Elies square from 5pm to 7pm with workshop and children's activities.

Vic

In the inland city of Vic, Sant Jordi will be celebrated with literature and cinematography. On April 23, the town is presenting the works of Jordi Lara, a Catalan writer, journalist and director.

Calonge i Sant Antoni

In the Costa Brava municipality of Calonge i Sant Antoni, Sant Jordi really takes over.

Calonge is considered a book town, a first in Catalonia, and features many bookstores among its streets.

A few days before Sant Jordi, from April 18 to the 27, Calonge will have stands with books and roses, shows and authors signing books to celebrate Catalonia's most romantic day. Five bookshops in the town are participating in the initiative.
