Torre dels Somnis mix of circus and opera debuts at Barcelona's Liceu opera hall
Lluís Danés' new grand spectacle shows the importance of the journey, not the destination
Director Lluís Danés' newest work, 'La torre dels somnis' (The tower of dreams), made its debut in Barcelona's Liceu opera hall on Saturday for the general public.
The spectacle will use Italian composer Giacomo Puccini's biggest hits with Sergi Cuenca as the musical director showing the music from a different perspective.
"Puccini's music is wonderful and very cinematic and allows you to add a lot of images," Danés said during a press conference in May.
The work speaks of "the importance of the journey, more than the destination, of not throwing in the towel and of personal setbacks in a world that is often dark," Danés added.
He also said the work claims joy, errors, dreams and utopia.
Circus meets opera
The spectacle combining circus and opera will include balancing acts, ropes, suspensions, trapeze and dance.
"Some are the acrobats of the body and others of the voice," Danés explained.
The circus part of the show is directed by Ingrid Esperanza and the choreography by Ariadna Peya.
The text is written by Alguer Miquel, frontman of former Catalan band Txarango.
"I suggested that he gives a voice to this piece of dramaturgy, and he has given it a wonderful text that already works on its own," the director said.
The tower of dreams will have four functions for families to watch, starting on June 1 and continuing on June 22, 23 and 29.
