The special universe of Antoni Tàpies on display at the Venice Biennale
The Palazzo Fortuny presents an exhibition that explores the Catalan artist’s work as well as his own private collections. The exhibition, ‘Tàpies. Lo sguardo dell’artista’ (Tàpies. The view of the artist), opens in June and visitors will be able to enjoy it until November. The show is part of the Biennale of Contemporary Art in Venice, and is curated by the son of the artist, Toni Tàpies, along with Natasha Hëbert, Daniela Ferreti and Axel Vervoordt.
Venice (ACN).- Catalan artist Antoni Tàpies has his own space at the Biennale of Contemporary Art in Venice. From this month until November, the Palazzo Fortuny in the Italian city presents the exhibition ‘Tàpies. Lo sguardo dell’artista’ (Tàpies. The view of the artist). The show explores Tàpies as an artist himself, but also as a collector. Most of the paintings on show have been selected from the Tàpies’ private collection, and some of them have never been shown in public before.
The exhibition includes works by Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Kazuo Shiraga, Franz Kline, Jackson Pollock and Jannis Kounellis, as well as some oriental and tribal sculptures. Moreover, the show also aims to present more contemporary artists that have made a tribute to Tàpies by exploring some of the issues that the artist worked on during his career. Amongst them one can find Perejaume Borrell, Anthony Caro, Marisa Merz, Giuseppe Penone, Kichizaemon Raku, Shiro Tsujimura and Gunther Uecker.
The Tàpies show in Venice includes more than 200 works in total, and is distributed over three floors. As well as paintings, visitors will be able to listen some of Tàpies favourite musicians, such as Shöenberg, Alban Berg, Scelsi, John Cage and Anton Webern. Similarly, movies about Tàpies’ work and life will be shown in the museum in order to make visitors more aware of the figure of this artist, who died in February last year.
