Singer Tom Odell’s Ode to Barcelona during a summery chilly night
Brition artist performs biggest hits such as ‘Another Love,’ ‘Hold Me,’ and ‘Best Day of My Life’ at Les Nits de Barcelona music festival
With a deep but soft voice, Brition singer Tom Odell took over Barcelona’s Jardins de Pedralbes music festival, the Les Nits de Barcelona. A concert that spectators believed would be a quiet one with a more relaxed atmosphere, but that was not the case on Tuesday evening.
It was not warm, but it was "a wonderful night,” Tom Odell said during his gig. Since he discovered the Catalan capital, he has always been welcomed by many spectators.
During the concert, he expressed his "love" for the city, especially playing in the unique gardens of the Pedralbes Palace. His soft, deep voice was magnificent and was accompanied by a beautiful summery but chilly night in Barcelona—still some clouds in the sky but no danger of rain. It was a refreshing temperature after the mercury dropped compared to the previous days.
The gig started with 'numb.' Odell did not disappoint his fans and played some of his biggest hits, such as 'Best Day of My Life' or 'Heal,' following a solo of 'Enemy.'
The song talks about his first anxiety, back in 2018, when he had "terrible panic attacks, and no longer trusted his inner person, that narrator, that friend, that person with who we discuss our problems internally," he said at mid-gig.
"I always trusted this friend, but when the panic attacks started, you learn that this inner voice is not always telling the truth," he added before announcing it was "probably the most depressing song of the set," making people laugh.
"You chose to be here. You know where you were getting to," he joked along with the audience before playing the first notes on the piano.
And if Odell took over the stage during his solo and small chat with the public, his fingers were the owners of the night. The way he played those piano keys left many of the spectators astonished.
He came to Barcelona to have fun, and it was clear when 'Hold Me' started playing. He extended the outro to see people dancing and asked them to sing along with him during the chorus. All while holding hands with their "loved ones," who accompanied them during the night.
But if 'Hold Me' was an apotheosis moment, when he confessed he would spend some more nights in Barcelona and requested beach recommendations, the public just started shouting spots to go to and sunbathe. "What's the best beach?" is a great way to start a debate mid-concert in a "glorious city."
The night could not end without 'Another Love,' his most famous song released in 2013, with his first studio recorded album, 'Long Way Down.' The long-awaited moment ended the concert, leaving a permanent memory for all of those spectators.
Tom Odell will not perform in Barcelona any time soon, but he will sing at the Menorca Music Festival on August 7, 2023.
