English singer Passenger plays intimate but 'amazing' concert in Nits de Barcelona
Michael David Rosenberg will sing in seaside botanical gardens of Cap Roig on Saturday
"Well, you only need the light when it's burning low. Only miss the Sun when it starts to snow…" English singer Passenger sang during his gig in Les Nits de Barcelona music festival on Wednesday.
Despite no snow in sight on a 30-degree night in July in the Catalan capital, the musician took over the stage in a very intimate concert with thousands in attendance. "In England, we do not have a summer, this is very warm for an Englishman," he said to the audience after asking if it was normal to have a heated night.
Michael David Rosenberg, most commonly known as Passenger, has one of the most listened songs in history in his repertoire, 'Let Her Go' a song that took all the audience's hearts when the first notes started playing in the Jardins de Pedralbes gardens.
The song is so popular that since its release in 2012, it has had over 3.69 billion views on YouTube. "I only have one famous song, so I will play it 12 times," he ironically shared at the beginning of the concert.
A hit named 'Let Her Go,' which should "not be confused from Let It Go," he continued to joke around the stage, as there could be "very disappointed 10-year-olds expecting to see a Disney Princess, and all that they get is just an Englishman with a beard."
"If you are confused, why is there not a band? It is just me and a guitar," he started by saying to the crowd.
To his surprise, he was hugely cheered, which was "really good news, as it is too late to get your money back."
Passenger is known for his indie folk genre and for other hits such as 'Scare Away the Dark' and the beautiful 'Queenstown.' However, one of the most unique moments of the concert was when he sang 'Wild Love,' a song that he has only sung in concerts, and a short snippet was released on social media a month ago.
Passenger sang one of his most famous hits (jokingly), 'Sound of Silence,' which he sang early in the show, saying it was his making and that a 10-year-old back in the UK once congratulated him for the melody. He never told that kid about Simon & Garfunkel.
The 40-year-old artist performs on a very intimate stage with his guitar and voice as the main characters. And despite looking like a lonely stage, there were times when his voice gave you goosebumps.
And while he bid farewell to the audience with 'Scare Away the Dark,' spectators called him back on stage with the chant of 'Oh, oooh, ooh, following the rhythm of the song. Once back, he could only say that the audience was "amazing" and started singing 'Things That Stop You Dreaming.'
During his decade-long career, the English singer has released up to 13 albums as a solo artist, added to the one that he already had released with the band: 'Passenger' in 2007.
Passenger will perform in Catalonia, once again, on Saturday at the Cap Roig festival in the seaside botanical gardens in Calella de Palafrugell.
