New abstract mural in western Catalonia town church attracts first visitors
Contemporary artist's work is part of Penelles' Gargar Festival
The small western Catalonia town of Penelles, in Noguera county, has a new attraction: a mural by contemporary artist Berni Puig located inside the local church.
Puig describes his colorful mural as a "pictorial reinterpretation of the map of Penelles" portraying the region's fields and plots of land "in an abstract manner."
Open to visitors as of Sunday, the piece kicks off Penelles' Gargar mural and rural art festival, which was supposed to take place last May but was postponed because of the public health situation.
Throughout the month of August, and as part of the festival, other artists including Slim Safont or Zabou, will be painting murals around town.
Gargar Festival will also host six concerts in front of Penelles' three shops.
