Lleida's oldest pub, Antares, shuts doors after 47 years
Venue, renowned for jazz sessions, requires major renovations to continue operating
Lleida's oldest pub, Antares, will shut its doors this Sunday night after operating during 47 years.
The bar requires major renovations to continue operating but, its owners have decided to take other professional challenges instead –yet, manager Guillem Muedra aims to sell the business.
The works needed include new bathrooms adapted for people with reduced mobility, and a new sound studio.
The venue manager said they will do their best to progress in the works so that some other owner takes over.
Muedra told the Catalan News Agency on Sunday that this is the last pub standing in the western Catalan capital with a space for small concerts and young musicians –the last band to play will be Ashonosun Trio on Sunday at 8pm.
The concert on Sunday evening will close a story that began in 1977 and that has witnessed shows by the likes of Perico Sambeat, Bob Sands and Joan Chamorro.
According to Muedra, people like the venue and "it works." Only last season, Antares held over 160 shows, including concerts, wine tastings, impro theater and poetry.
