Russian trapeze artists and members of the Chinese National Circus will be among almost 80 performers from all around the world taking part in Girona's international circus festival, which kicked off on Thursday.

The Circ Elefant d'Or festival celebrates its 8th edition this year in the northern Catalan city, which will feature performances from a dozen different circus disciplines until the grand finale, the Espectacle d'Or, on February 19.

The festival unofficially began on Thursday in the big top tent erected in Girona's Devesa area with a dress rehearsal witnessed by more than 4,000 local schoolchildren, which was followed in the evening with the official start featuring the show, Blau.

In all, 76 artists in 24 different shows will take part in the festival. Before the event comes to an end on February 19, some 16 performances are programmed in the circus tent that has room for some 2,100 people.
