Freddie Mercury's 'Barcelona' song manuscript sold for €67,000
Sotheby's London also auctions more than 1,500 personal objects of the singer
Sotheby's auction house auctioned a collection of 200 lots of more than 1,500 personal objects from legendary Queen singer Freddy Mercury.
Among those objects, there is the manuscript of the song "Barcelona", the anthem of Barcelona's 1992 Olympic Games, which Mercury sang alongside Catalan opera singer Montserrat Caballé.
The starting price was €18,000, but it ended up being sold for €66,647.33 (£57,150) on Thursday afternoon.
Other objects like pieces of jewelry, letters, instruments, and paintings by Goya and Salvador Dalí that Mercury owned were also auctioned, as well as the dresses he wore during his performance for the Olympic Games.
Barcelona's town hall, together with the Olympic Foundation, planned to bid to acquire the manuscript of the song, as the sports councilor of Barcelona, David Escudé told Catalan radio station RAC1. However, the budget of the public administration was €30,000, according to sources from the city council.
The collection "Freddie Mercury: A World of His Own" was auctioned in six separate themed auctions that started on Wednesday.
On Thursday, September 7 the first manuscripts were auctioned.
Square or street named for Mercury and Caballé
The Barcelona city council has planned for some time already to name a street or square after Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé.
Now, it's been revealed that the council will dedicate a street or square in the newly developed Glòries area to the iconic singers.
City councilor for sports, David Escudé, explained on radio station RAC1 that the naming committee will now have to study the proposal.
